Number of rescuers increases but so do industrial safety problems

The number of professional rescue workers on the mainland has reached 250,000 as the country struggles to tackle its notorious industrial safety problems. China has trained and raised a huge army of professional rescue workers and established 20 state-level emergency base camps, said Liu Qiang , an official from the State Administration of Work Safety. He linked industrial accidents to China's rapid economic development. 'The number of [industrial accidents] is decreasing, but the damage caused on average is more serious and the consequences are more long lasting than before,' he said. China News Service said 277 people had died in 158 industrial accidents involving dangerous chemicals last year, up 21 per cent over 2005. Staff Reporter
