Poll bad news for loyalists

Almost a third of registered voters who responded to a survey say they will vote for pan-democrat candidates in the district council elections, while only 16 per cent will support Beijing loyalists.

The Chinese University survey also found 88 per cent of respondents indicated they would vote.

In the phone survey last week, 82.9 per cent of the 2,167 respondents said they were registered voters, of whom 59.5 per cent said they would vote and 28.7 per cent said they may vote.

Among them, 32.7 per cent said they would choose pan-democrats, while 16 per cent said they would favour Beijing loyalists. Almost 40 per cent said they would vote for independents.

About 70 per cent said they would vote according to a candidate's district work record, 45.7 per cent cited their election platform and 34.8 per cent mentioned political party backgrounds.

Some 61 per cent said they were concerned about the local election. Of those, 80.4 per cent said they were worried about livelihood issues rather than political developments.
