A major power failure in Shanghai paralysed operations at a key Chang'e monitoring station for more than an hour and a half on Saturday, Xinmin Evening News reported yesterday. The station, at the Shanghai Observatory, was in charge of monitoring the orbiter's status and data transmission when the failure occurred.

The observatory said no data was lost and operation of the satellite was unaffected, despite the 25-metre antenna going blind for more than 100 minutes. The interruption prompted officials to decide to buy a backup power system for the observatory.
