Kiss me, Anson in the numbers game

Martin Wong

The next auction of personalised car licence plates might appeal to the sporty and the political.

Among the 242 number plates that will be auctioned on November 17 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai are 'OLYMPIC' and 'ANSON'.

With Beijing hosting the Olympic Games in August next year, and former chief secretary Anson Chan Fang On-sang running for a Legislative Council seat in a by-election this month, the two plates might trigger some enthusiastic bidding.

Hong Kong being chosen as the host city for the Olympic equestrian events could add some extra appeal.

It is not known if Mrs Chan, who is seeking election in the Hong Kong Island seat held by former Democratic Alliance chairman Ma Lik, triggered the auction of 'ANSON' or if she will bid for the plate. Plate names are nominated by interested parties and then put up for competitive bidding.

Other plates that will be on auction this month include 'BLESSING', 'POTATO', 'HONEST', 'VICTORY' and 'KISS ME'.

A list of the licence plates to be auctioned can be found on the Transport Department's website at www.td.gov.hk.

The auction will be the 11th since then-financial secretary Henry Tang Ying-yen launched the scheme in September last year to raise funds to help the poor.

The scheme raised HK$57.8 million in its first year, well below the government's target of HK$70 million.

The highest successful bid to date was HK$1.4 million for 'I L0VE U' at the first auction. Next biggest was HK$700,000 for 'FERRAR1'.
