HSBC move on climate change

HSBC

A leading banking group has launched a scheme to raise awareness of climate change.

The six-month programme, titled 'EcoGala', is a contribution by Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation to help in the fight against global warming.

An EcoGala website encourages a 'low-carbon lifestyle', with suggestions to cut consumption of energy, water and goods, thereby decreasing waste, and to lead a healthy lifestyle. Suggestions also include cutting dependence on electrical equipment, using more public transport and avoiding overpackaged products.

Observatory director Lam Chiu-ying has been invited to write a column on climate change and people can share views and discuss issues on the website.

HSBC deputy chairwoman Laura Cha Shih May-lung said climate change was 'everybody's business'.

'It is in the best interest of HSBC to care for the environmental well-being of Hong Kong and of the planet,' she said. 'We would like to encourage our colleagues, our families and the wider community to get involved by adopting a greener lifestyle.'

People can sign up to the mission statement on http://www.hsbc.com. hk/climatepartners.
