Turn pressure into positive energy

I had been a happy-go-lucky boy before September this year. However, when I started Form Four this academic year, everything changed. The peer pressure and heavy workload stressed me out.

Extra-curricular activities, such as debating and violin practice, are time-consuming. All this has put great pressure on me.

Is pressure a good thing? Everyone has their own opinion, but our attitude towards it may change our future. Many students do not have the ability to handle pressure. Since the beginning of the new school term, a few students have committed suicide because of pressure.

Many celebrities say that they faced enormous pressure on their way to success. They turned pressure into energy that pushed them towards success.

Pressure can be an angel or a devil. If we turn it into energy, we can overcome obstacles. I've decided to consider it an angel and work with it.

Thanks for your wonderful letter, Michael. I like the way in which you have taken something negative - stress - and turned it around to see the positive. Stress is indeed an inevitable part of our life - whether it's exam pressure as a student, or pressure from work later as an adult, we all face stress at some point.

Rather than running away from stressful situations, the best approach is to learn how to deal with them. Everyone reacts to stress differently and there is no one right way to cope with it. My own favourite stress-buster is exercise, for others it may be music or talking to friends.

Find out what works for you and make sure to practise it - it's something you'll be grateful for all your life.
