Leisure venue fire kills 11
Eleven people were killed early yesterday when a blaze ripped through a two-storey entertainment centre in Chengde county, Hebei province .
County authorities initially said the blaze broke out in a karaoke bar, but later said it started in the Blue Sky foot spa, on the floor above the bar. The building was partly residential.
Police said the fire was reported at 4.47am and the blaze was extinguished about half an hour later.
Two people were rescued from the fire, but 10 women and a man died. The identities of the dead and the cause of the fire had not been confirmed.
The number of fires across the mainland dropped more than 30 per cent to 133,942 in the first 10 months of the year, police announced last week.
Even so, serious fires - notably in entertainment complexes, factories and mines - keep making headlines. Last month, 37 died in a shoe factory fire in Fujian .
