Huge eatery a challenging Italian job

The proprietors of Goccia and DiVino are betting on a large new eatery in Tsim Sha Tsui's Ocean Terminal that is over 8,000 sq ft, including a huge outdoor terrace. Soft-opened for about a month, Spasso was feted on Thursday with a party that went to nearly 1am, with hordes of hungry guests crowding the pizza counter for fresh pies and a cheesy Italian crooner serenading on the patio.
Now, the challenge for manager Giacomo Pani (far right) is to fill the huge place nightly.
'Our first thought when we took the place was to offer the widest variety,' he explains. 'Indeed, it takes some inspiration from DiVino and Goccia but also has its own style. It's traditional Italian with a twist.'
Their biggest catch was luring the chef from Dolce & Gabbana's Gold cafe in Milan (pictured left) here. 'Luckily, he wanted a change. He's 30, 31, so what better time to go for international experience.'
Now, Pani will just have to juggle traversing back and forth from Soho to Ocean Terminal. 'Spasso is a new, beautiful baby but not really walking yet, so I'll have to spend more time here. I'll be like a ping-pong ball, back and forth, but it's no problem for me.'
