Ocean's 10 - Hong Kong votes for most-loved marine species
The Chinese white dolphin, the green turtle and horseshoe crab have been voted as Hong Kong's favourite local marine species by 6,841 people in a poll conducted by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).
Named Ocean 10, the poll was carried out this summer and divided into three categories: My Favourite Ocean's 10, Ocean 10's Most Wanted and The Most Energetic Ocean's 10.
The Chinese white dolphin topped all three while the green turtle took second place in two.
Yet some of Hong Kong's favourite marine life may disappear. The WWF warned that the green turtle, the Chinese Bahaba and the horseshoe crab face the threat of extinction. Green turtles have not returned to their regular nesting beach at Sham Wan on Lamma Island for four consecutive years - an indication that the generation nesting there could be the last.
'These ancient mariners are in dire straits in Hong Kong. There's a good chance we're watching them go extinct right in front of our eyes,' said Dr Andy Cornish, conservation director of WWF Hong Kong.
'It may not be too late, but we've got to make urgent and major conservation efforts.'
