Just as style-savvy shoppers update their wardrobe for a new season, an emerging trend in home decor involves adding touches and accents here and there to give interiors the sensibility of the season to come - whether they are rich jewel tones and earthy accents for autumn, or pretty florals and pastels for spring.

This autumn, stores and designers have been rolling out their crispest, warmest looks where rugs, fabrics and tabletop accessories are concerned.

United States decor chain Z Gallerie (zgallerie.com) has dressed up its stores in shades of dark brown, burned orange and gleaming gold to reflect the colours of the season. Pumpkins and gourds in frosted or beaded glass are being offered in shades of copper and golden orange, and in myriad sizes, as a perfect accent to dinner parties. Place mats and napkins are in colours ranging from deep red and moss green to mocha and burnished gold, many beaded or otherwise embellished for a celebratory feel.

A sprinkling of gold in any form can liven up dining tables and surface covers. Italian brand Mepra (mepra.it) has followed the trend with its sleek, dull-gold flatware. German company Dibbern (dibbern.de), meanwhile, has peppered its tableware with gold leaves (below left).

From Crate and Barrel (crateandbarrel.com) come plump cushions in shades of burgundy, orange and pale gold - hues that evoke nights in by a roaring fire.

Swedish rug maker Kasthall (kasthall.com), which produces hand-tufted and woven rugs, is tapping into the season's earthier themes with a few key looks: the Tekla comes in shades of toffee, caramel and violet (below right) while the almost-rugged Stig was inspired by nature trails. Mansour Modern (mansourmodern.com), a Los Angeles gallery specialising in unique rugs, is adhering to the trend by putting out dark-hued products with a warm, tactile, hand-done feel.

Fabrics provide an excellent opportunity to liven up a space. New York-based furnishing-fabric maker Kravet (kravet.com) has enlisted top Los Angeles designer Michael Berman to come up with luxe drapes and carpets - and they happen to be perfect for the season. The sumptuous curtains come in colours such as chocolate, gold and cream.
