on style, she rules

The nurse from my doctor's office has asked me where in Hong Kong she can get a pair of comfortable, nice ballet flats like mine. I bought them from Repetto, in Paris, but I think she may want to go slightly more downmarket.

Flat Out, Clear Water Bay

The Dictator rules: Feeling quite important with your fan club at the doctor's office, aren't you? Let's hope you didn't tell her she might not be able to afford your shoes - that next injection might be more painful than you would like. For the record, you don't have to fly to Paris for Repetto ballet flats. They're sold in Hong Kong for about HK$1,700 from Lane Crawford (Times Square, Causeway Bay, tel: 2118 3638) and On Pedder (G/F, Wheelock House, 20 Pedder Street, Central, tel: 2118 3489). We're still mad about French Sole ballerinas (from HK$899; Lady Place, unit A, 1/F, World Trust Tower, 50 Stanley Street, Central, tel: 2854 2321). They're made in the traditional way, with no assigned left or right foot, and naturally form to the shape of your feet. Plus, they come in lots of colours and finishes. Abebi (shop B32, The Landmark, Central, customer service hotline: 2576 0776) stocks an interesting mix, from plain to glittery, and from brands such as Status (HK$1,090 to HK$1,690). If your nurse can't afford any of these because she is on the minimum wage then: 1) find another doctor; 2) recommend she visits market shoe shops (try Fa Yuen Street, Central, or Jardine's Bazaar, Causeway Bay), which sell lots of styles of flats for as little as HK$79.

Where can I get a pair of those earrings with a Buddha motif?

Shopper's Mantra, Sai Kung

The Dictator: If the Christian cross can become an acceptable accessory regardless of its religious significance to the wearer, then I guess Siddhartha is fair game. We still don't love the idea, and doubt many people do given these earrings were hard to find. Guess which notoriously irreverent retailer we eventually found them at? That's right, G.O.D. (48 Hollywood Road, Central, tel: 2805 1876). It sells red, carved enamel Buddha heads dangling from classic metal hooks for HK$180. I suppose any pendants can be turned into earrings, as at the amusingly named online retailer, www.dharmashop.com, where little metal earrings in Tibetan Buddha shapes go for US$26, not including shipping. It seems you are not the only one with a hankering for religious icons on earrings.

Where can I buy a good, long-lasting shimmering powder for putting on my shoulders and arms?

Clara Belle, Quarry Bay

The Dictator: I feel like a broken record, endlessly playing some muzak version of that song about life going in cycles. I don't care if past requests have been about shimmer creams and oils - same difference.

Our favourite shimmer powder is Kitten by Benefit Cosmetics (HK$280; Faces, Harbour City, Tsim Sha Tsui, tel: 2118 5622). It comes in a cute box and is applied via its own pink powder puff, giving a shimmering, lightly golden glow and subtle floral scent. All we ask is you avoid full-on glitter ...

unless you want to look like you have just been to a 10-year-old's birthday party. A new name to us, Linden is a naturally oriented brand from New Zealand that produces a glimmering, slightly bronze powder (HK$169; Pure Beauty, shop B212, Times Square, Causeway Bay, tel: 2506 1521). Packaged with a brush, the powder is easy to apply and convenient to carry.
