More local designers are tapping into their Chinese heritage to produce pieces that are decidedly modern while paying tribute to Chinese culture.

Jewellery design house Qeelin is known for its Chinese-inspired styles with a contemporary twist.

'All our collections possess a symbol: Bo Bo Panda represents peace and friendship; Wulu is for luck; Tien Di for eternal love; and Lotus for abundance and prosperity,' says designer Dennis Chan.

The brand's new Ling Long collection features the bells traditionally tied around newborns' feet to ward off evil spirits and bring luck. The line features a pendant, earrings, bracelet, a ring and a limited-edition Grande Pendant featuring five bells, with only 88 pieces available internationally.

'We want to create modern interpretations of Chinese symbols that can be understood anywhere in the world by anybody,' says Chan.

Designer Dickson Yewn takes a similar approach with his Life of Circle label, opting for auspicious Chinese motifs redesigned in an abstract form. 'I interpret them in my own kind of form. All these auspicious motifs come down to one simple meaning: to live a happy life. The Chinese sensibility in my work is usually found in the meaning of the motifs and in the design philosophy behind it.'
