Think out of the box

Technology has developed rapidly over the past decades, making the world a more prosperous place. Along with the progress, our lives have changed.

In the 19th century, flying was thought to be impossible, but it became a reality in 1903, thanks to the Wright brothers.

If restrictions were imposed on scientists, the world would not have developed so fast. Exploring beyond the limits has led to many wonderful inventions, which are of paramount importance today.

A valuable lesson we can learn from scientists is that thinking out of the box is the key to success.

Constant innovation is needed to improve our lives.

If more and more people think out of the box, the world will definitely be a better place to live in.

Thanks for your letter about the importance of thinking out of the box, Cheuk-hei. I love hearing stories about fantastic things that are created by someone daring to do something differently - and more often than not the new thing is created by accident.

When I was in London last month I went to an exhibition of photos by Lee Miller. She was a model-turned photographer and did some beautiful work. One of the photos that I really liked was made using a special effect that she created quite by accident. She was in the dark room when she felt something run over her foot. Thinking it was a mouse, she turned on the light for a few seconds and then turned it off - which created an unexpectedly good effect on the photo she was developing.

Sometimes the best things come about from apparent mistakes - so always be prepared to see the good in things.
