Outtakes

Peak performance by Jimmy Barnes

It was noted during last weekend's election that Hong Kong is Australia's biggest offshore constituency after London, and absentee Aussie voters may be pleased to hear that a legend of Down Under rock is making a return to the city.

Jimmy Barnes will play one night at Cafe Deco on The Peak on January 17, coming after a show at the same venue in September 2005 when he was touring to promote his previous album, Double Happiness.

He will be touring to showcase his upcoming album, Out in the Blue, which sees Barnes turning his hand to blues, funk, dance, soul and gospel.

Tickets are HK$780, which includes two drinks and Australian-style snacks.

Sweet sounds of Kandi

Upscale British clubbing brand Hed Kandi is bringing its glamorous funky-house sounds back to town.

For the Disco Kandi event, promoters are moving to Club JJ's in the Grand Hyatt Hotel and giving it a makeover with the Hed Kandi artwork and visuals.

Headlining the event will be Hed Kandi veteran DJ Andy Warburton, who over the past six summers has been dropping disco house at top Ibiza bars including Cafe Mambo and Pacha Terrace. He'll be supported by percussionist Pav, who also made a name for himself in Ibiza as the resident skinman for Manumission and MTV International, and has also been asked to share the stage with the likes of Armin van Buuren, Erick Morrillo and Roger Sanchez.

Advance tickets for the gig are HK$280 or HK$350 on the door.

Ringing in the new year

New Year's Eve is traditionally the most hedonistic night on the party calendar, and if you usually take a bacchanalian approach to the evening you should be spending it with Brandon Block (below) at Central club Drop.

Block is as famous for his hellraising antics as he is for his skills as a DJ, and, when he's actually able to play, drops an uplifting blend of party house music. Keep your eyes peeled for more details.

Bloc Party may hit the decks

New trend: rock stars as DJs. After half of British new-rave act Sh**disco take to Volar's decks tomorrow night, the Central club is hoping to secure a DJ set by members of British indie rockers Bloc Party on January 18.
