A sense of what it is like to have Aids

A quick reminder that tomorrow is World Aids Day and if you believe you can't understand someone until you walk in their shoes, then Crossroads International has created a new simulated 'X-perience' where participants can get a first-hand sense of what it's like to have Aids or be at high risk of contracting HIV from four different perspectives. The non-profit group has simulated other experiences as fund-raisers, such as spending a day as a refugee or living in slum-bound poverty. Their newest X-perience was given a trial run earlier this year through funding from Operation Santa Claus. Participants will be exposed to life as if they were:

An abducted African child soldier forced to fight who gets contaminated through blood contact in a war zone;

A socially pressured Hong Kong student at risk from dangerous social activities;

A poor Asian teenager tricked into prostitution; or

An East European rural mother infected by a blood transfusion.

It's an excellent programme to grasp first-hand what so many other people sadly have to live through daily.

Also, note that on Thursday, Q97 in Lan Kwai Fong will host a fund-raiser auction for Aids Concern with a set of eight unpublished Marilyn Monroe photographs by Eve Arnold up for sale. More next week, but make sure you buy a red ribbon and wear it tomorrow.
