Meeting public sector demands

Working in a profession where the health of senior citizens is a priority demands a great understanding of how to meet the demands made on the public sector.

Winnie So Wing-yan, an executive officer with the Department of Health, decided to study a Master of Science in Management (Public Sector Management) at PolyU, as one of the best ways of gaining a better insight into how the provision of health care works.

'I wanted to know more about the views of the different stakeholders of my industry,' she said, before adding that it was important to know how the public sector is run from a macro perspective.

'Our studies weren't based on foreign cases. Instead, the programme was delivered in a local context.'

One of the courses, 'Current Issues in Public Sector Management', studied the move towards e-government, which she said was relatively unheard of in Hong Kong five to 10 years ago.

'We were taught to embrace those people who can't use the internet,' she said. 'Only by [doing] this are we able to manage the public sector electronically.'
