The story without an ending
This week Princess Diana by Cherry Gilchrist
Princess Diana was killed in a car crash in 1997. She was with her boyfriend, Dodi Al Fayed, the son of the owner of Harrods, the famous London shop.
They were in a Mercedes, driving fast through Paris in an attempt to escape the press photographers following them on motorbikes, trying to steal pictures of the famous couple.
The driver lost control, the car crashed, and both Diana and Dodi were killed. The inquest into their deaths is being held this year. It has been delayed for 10 years because of legal reasons.
It has re-opened debates about whether their death was an accident or murder, and what exactly happened. Ten years after her death, this is a fairy story without an ending.
The fairy tale wedding
Diana Spencer married Prince Charles, heir to the throne of England, in 1981. It was a fairy tale wedding. She was a beautiful young girl; he was the world's most eligible bachelor.
The wedding took place in St Paul's Cathedral with all the pageantry and spectacle expected of a royal wedding. The public thought that it was the perfect marriage.
A happy marriage?
In the early years, it looked like a happy marriage. Diana had to learn how to deal with being in the public eye. She had to get used to being photographed wherever she went.
She also had to get used to living in royal palaces. This was not easy for her.
She had two children, William and Harry. She also began to do a lot of work with charities. She visited people with Aids in hospital.
She visited sick children, and she did a lot of work with people in countries such as Angola and Bosnia.
On the outside, everything seemed fine. But Diana was hurting inside. There were three people in her marriage.
It turned out that Charles had always been in love with another woman called Camilla. She was older than Charles, but seemed to understand him. What's more, Charles had continued to be in love with her, and to see her, throughout his marriage to Diana.
Moreover, Diana was suffering from eating disorders and had tried to kill herself on several occasions. She could not bear the suffocating life of the royal family, and felt that life was stuffy and no fun.
She was also devastated that Charles did not love her and that there was a third person in their marriage.
The marriage collapses
Diana and Charles began to lead separate lives. She began to have other relationships. She and Charles moved into separate homes, and in 1996 they were divorced.
This was a big scandal for the royal family, and people began to question openly whether Britain should be a republic without a king and queen at all.
Her new lover
Dodi became Diana's new boyfriend. They were very much in love, and people began to think that they might get married.
They were relentlessly followed by photographers known as paparazzi. They were desperate for photographs of the couple that they could sell for a lot of money to magazines all over the world.
It was during one such pursuit that they were both killed.
The story continues
Charles has since married Camilla, and she may become queen in the future.
Meanwhile, no one has forgotten Diana. She is remembered for her kindness and her beauty.
Diana lives on in people's hearts as 'the people's princess'.
