Man on critical list after congee

A fisherman was fighting for his life lastnight after eating congee made with a poisonous pufferfish on board a cargo vessel off Stonecutters Island. The 54-year-old man, surnamed Wong, complained of feeling dizzy and numbness in his limbs after eating the rice porridge at about 10.45am. He was unconscious when taken to Princess Margaret Hospital, where he was in critical condition.

Car nearly falls from expressway

A sports car carrying three people nearly drove off the Island Eastern Corridor in North Point after crashing into the back of another sports car at 3.30am. It mounted the anti-crash barrier and ran for five metres on two wheels. The two male drivers, who passed breathalyser tests, and three female passengers were taken to Eastern Hospital, where a man and 26-year-old woman were in stable condition. The others were discharged.

Community service for cutting aid

Former Education and Manpower Bureau officer Kwok Tak-on, who reviewed applications for student financial aid, was sentenced to 100 hours of community service by Tsuen Wan Court. Kwok, 37, illegally changed household income figures on 20 aid applications so applicants received half the money they should have.

Falling wood injures woman

A 27-year-old woman suffered head injuries when a 15cm wooden rod fell on her in Carnarvon Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, at 10.25am. She was treated at Queen Elizabeth Hospital and discharged. A handyman redecorating a flat was arrested and later released on HK$1,000 bail.

Economy to remain strong

The city's economy will remain strong with an estimated growth rate of 5 per cent, according to the Bank of China's latest economic review. Unemployment would also remain low at 3.5 per cent.

Warning on fraudulent bank site

The Monetary Authority warned of a fraudulent website,, which looks similar to the website of the Bank of China (Hong Kong). Anyone who has used it should call the bank, 2332 3328, or police, 2860 5012.

Man hurt in minibus roll

A male passenger suffered minor injuries when a minibus crashed into the central divider and toppled on its side on Hiram's Highway near Clear Water Bay Road, Sai Kung.
