HK records in last round
400m champ Leung credits coach for win
Two Hong Kong records and one junior record were broken at the final round of the Hong Kong Athletic League Championships at Wan Chai Sports Ground earlier this month.
The competition was organised by the Hong Kong Amateur Athletic Association (HKAAA). The two Hong Kong records were set in the men's 400 metres and women's hammer throw.
After the five-round event, Leung Ki-ho clinched the men's 400m and 200m championship. In the 400m, he broke the Hong Kong age group and HKAAA records with a time of 47.79 seconds. 'I set a record of 48.6 seconds at the Hong Kong Junior Age Group Athletic Meet 2007 - Race 3 a week earlier. It greatly boosted my confidence,' said Leung.
'I was determined to break the Hong Kong record. I'm thrilled and I have to thank my coach for her support and guidance.'
Coach Ip Wan-fung said Leung deserved his success. 'Leung has put a lot of effort into training. I expected him to break the record, but his time [47.79 seconds] surprised me.'
In the men's 200m, Leung clocked 21.29 seconds, 0.82 seconds ahead of second-placed Fan Wai-ho.
In the women's hammer throw, Leung Yee-mei broke the Hong Kong record with 50.16m, eclipsing her previous mark by 1.08m. 'I'm happy that I was finally able to meet my target,' she said.
'I'd set 50m as my target for two years. I finally made it. My new target in the coming year is 52m.'
In the women's pole vault, Wong Chui-yiu broke the Hong Kong age group and HKAAA age group records with 2.8m, improving on the previous mark by 0.2m.
Chan Ho-yee reigned supreme in the women's 100m and 200m, timing 12.15 seconds and 25.32 seconds, respectively.
Lai Chun-ho clinched the men's 100m title in 10.45 seconds, followed by Yip Siu-keung who clocked 10.65 seconds.
Lo Ngai-fung won the men's 110m hurdles race in 14.91 seconds, edging out Tang Hon-sin by 0.004 seconds. Chu Wan-ho came third, 0.09 seconds behind Tang.
