The sixth annual Business of Design Week conference is in full swing once again at the Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai.

As usual, there's an eclectic mix of known name speakers from the design and creative world. One of the more recognised designers is Tom Dixon, whose work is mostly in the area of lighting and furniture.

While these disciplines aren't as sexy as fashion or jewellery, the Englishman is something of a rock star in the field for a select group of fans (dare we call them light and furniture groupies?) who came out to his meet and greet on Tuesday evening at Lane Crawford, where some of his work is on sale.

'It's good to come here,' he chatted casually. 'China is where it's happening so it's good to come over, and these events are good reasons to come over. But I can do without the speaking part.' Although it was supposed to start at 6pm, Dixon, quite a pleasant chap in person, was fashionably late.

So, does he believe in the idea that a good designer can design anything from clothes and cars to chair and buildings?

'That doesn't work sometimes. But it is good to do a variety of things.'

Business of Design Week runs until Saturday.
