Mellow out to the soft rock sounds of Los Angeles-based alternative/indie rock band Rilo Kiley's new album Under The Blacklight. The group is fronted by two former child actors, Jenny Lewis (Troop Beverly Hills, The Wizard) and Blake Sennett (Salute Your Shorts, Boy Meets World), along with Pierre de Reeder and Jason Boesel.

Although Rilo Kiley is not as well known as bands such as Maroon 5 or Bon Jovi, their music has been featured in several movies and television shows, including Dawson's Creek, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The OC and Grey's Anatomy.

Rilo Kiley seem a 21st-century version of 1970s band Blondie. Lewis, the vocalist, has a mesmerising and commanding voice that draws you in as soon as she opens her mouth.

Every track on Under The Blacklight has something different to offer. Highlights include Dejalo, which is reminiscent of Gloria Estefan with its Latin beat, and somewhat watered-down Miami Sound Machine instrumentals. The Angels Hung Around and 15 are bluesy, country-style ballads that conjure up barn dances and cowboy hats. Another noteworthy track is Smoke Detector, which has a 1960s Beatles sound to it.

Rilo Kiley is an interesting band whose diverse sound is worth a listen.
