A Baptist University student has died after she was found unconscious in a Kowloon Tong campus dormitory, about five-and-a-half hours after drinking alcohol at a gathering with fellow students.

Yeung Nga-ki, 20, a first-year physics student, was found collapsed in the room of a male classmate in the Student Residence Halls in Baptist University Road just after 10.30am yesterday. She was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, where doctors declared her dead at 11.10am.

An officer from Kowloon City police station said the woman had a health problem but refused to give details.

The officer said initial investigations found nothing suspicious and an autopsy would be carried out.

Yeung apparently broke the university's restrictions, drinking alcohol with several other students in the dormitory early yesterday.

'Initial investigations indicated that she consumed alcohol with her classmates until 5am and then went to bed there,' the officer said.

A university spokesman said they would follow up on the case as drinking was not allowed in the student residences.

He added that students were not allowed to visit one another in the dormitory between 1am and 7am.

The university expressed deep sorrow over Yeung's death, saying: 'The university extends its sincerest condolences to Miss Yeung's family and has liaised with them in order to understand their needs and provide assistance.'

Its Student Affairs Office also arranged counsellors to provide counselling to hall residents and students.
