Bird species find at Mai Po

A wild bird species has been found in the Mai Po nature reserve for the first time. WWF Hong Kong said a juvenile black scoter, or Melanitta nigra (americana), was found on December 9. The species breeds in northern latitudes and had only been recorded as far south as Fujian. Bena Smith, an officer at the reserve, said the bird, about 10 months old and probably a female, might have lost its way. Also, a Japanese marsh warbler (Megalurus pryeri), a globally threatened species, was recorded for the first time in the reserve last month.
