Vivek Mahbubani performs in Central.

Stand-up comics such as Dayo Wong Chi-wah and Cheung Tat-ming had better watch out. Emerging funnyman Vivek Mahbubani is fast carving a niche for himself on the local scene - in Cantonese and English.

The surprise winner in the Chinese-language section of the city's first comedy festival two months ago - and a finalist in the English section - Mahbubani has since been performing regularly at club and corporate functions.

There's more to the 25-year-old's act than the novelty of jokes being delivered in fluent Cantonese. As an ethnic Indian who was born and raised in Hong Kong, he gives a refreshing take on the city's cultural blinkers and foibles.

'I try to add a good touch of Hong Kong in my humour because there are a lot of funny things going on in town. I grew up here, so I know the city well and the way the locals think,' says Mahbubani, a freelance Web designer.

'When I introduce myself on stage I sometimes say 'I'm a hairy, curry-smelling Indian'. People laugh and realise 'that's exactly what I think about Indians ...' It's just a matter of putting a funny situation in the right perspective and giving a good delivery.'

Although his American-accented English may suggest an international school background, Mahbubani came through the local education system, learning to speak Cantonese as well as to read and write Chinese characters. His linguistic skills give him a multi-faceted view of the community. His many Chinese friends also help provide material for his shows, in which he may have fun with a Twins song or the odd western names that some locals like to adopt.
