Four workers killed in oil tank explosion

Four workers were killed and four injured after an oil tank explosion in a chemical factory in Shanxi province , Xinhua reported yesterday. The blast occurred around 2pm when workers were dismantling ageing oil tanks that were no longer in service at the Jinan Technology and Trade plant in the provincial capital, Taiyuan , the Taiyuan Work Safety Administration said. Administration director Yang Zhiling said the four injured were no longer in a critical condition. A preliminary investigation showed 'improper actions' of the workers were to blame, he said. Ex-F1 chief appeals against embezzlement conviction

Former Formula One boss Yu Zhifei has lodged an appeal against his conviction for embezzlement, the Anhui -based Xinan Evening News reported. Yu, 54, was sentenced to four years in jail by an Anhui court on Thursday for embezzling 1.05 million yuan from a football club he ran to buy a luxury home. He was also fined 300,000 yuan. But Zhang Tiefeng, one of his lawyers, said Yu notified officials before he bought the house and the property rights belonged to the company rather than Yu. Mr Zhang also claimed Yu's case was unrelated to the Shanghai pension fund scandal. Lilian Zhang

Former Hebei vice-governor heads long list of reshuffles

Former Hebei vice-governor Fu Shuangjian has been appointed deputy minister of the State Administration of Industry and Commerce; former department head Lu Zhongyuan has been promoted to vice-director of the State Council's Development Research Centre; former assistant chairman of the China Banking Regulatory Commission, Wang Zhaoxing, is the commission's new vice-chairman; and former Gansu vice-governor Sun Xiaoxi and Li Keping, secretary of the National Council for Social Security Funds, have been named council vice-chairmen.
