Driver sought after hit-and-run death

Police were hunting last night for a hit-and-run driver after a woman was killed in an accident in Tsuen Wan - the fourth such case in three weeks.

Wu Pang-ting, 23, was found lying unconscious with multiple injuries at the corner of Shing Mun and Castle Peak roads at 7.10am. Tyre tracks stretched the length of her body and her shoes, glasses and handbag were strewn along the road.

She was taken to Princess Margaret Hospital, where doctors declared her dead at 8.16am.

'The woman was run over by a vehicle from her head to her legs. Tyre marks were found on the head, body and legs,' a police investigator said.

He said no skid marks were found on the road, indicating the driver did not brake heavily. The vehicle sped away after the accident.

From the size of the tyre marks, investigators suspect it was a goods- delivery truck.

Officers said Wu had been jaywalking, even though there was a footbridge at the junction.

Police said it would be difficult to trace the vehicle as there was no physical evidence at the scene and no surveillance cameras from nearby shops and buildings captured the accident.

Officers were due to return to the scene at 7am today in a search for possible witnesses

Wu, a clerical worker in Sha Tin, lived with her parents in Tuen Mun. She was on the way to work when the accident happened.

A security guard at a nearby residence said he saw three other vehicles - a light goods van, a car and a taxi - drive past the victim without stopping to help the injured woman as she lay on the ground, before a passing motorcyclist came to her assistance.

Yesterday's tragedy was the fourth hit-and-run in three weeks.

On December 19, Lee Kam-chuen, 63, was killed by a hit-and-run truck in Ma Wang Road, Yuen Long. Police are still looking for the truck.

On December 25, a motorcyclist and his passenger were injured when their bike and a car collided in Wan Chai. The car sped off. On January 4, a man, 54, was the victim of a hit-and-run in Tseung Kwan O.
