Event management

Event managers are in high demand in various sectors including investment banking, publishing, live communications and financial communications agencies as organisations seek to build their brands and develop closer relationships with clients through experiential marketing and face-to-face interaction.

Primarily, investment banks and financial communications agencies are looking for event professionals to manage their events or IPO road shows in mainland China. But there's also a surge in demand from live communications agencies and event management companies which manage large-scale conferences, trade and entertainment-related events in the mainland and Macau.

Publishing companies are also increasingly diversifying their revenue streams by launching event divisions.

The challenge is to find high-calibre candidates with extensive event management experience and strong Putonghua skills.

If you are passionate about working in a dynamic environment and thrive on being well organised, you may consider a career in event management. A university degree and prior project management experience are recommended, but specific professional qualifications are not required.

In general, event managers identify event opportunities, develop a programme schedule, identify and confirm a list of speakers and co-ordinate the design, production, logistics and publicity. Overseeing sponsorship and providing on-site event supervision may also be required.

In the first year, a new recruit will operate in an event co-ordination and support-related role that will include intensive on-the-job training.

After about three years, they will move into a logistics manager role and be promoted to a project management role. Individuals can expect to become an event producer after working for eight to 10 years, with an event director position following 12 years.

Some companies offer regional event managers generous travel and transport allowances on top of general expenses when co-ordinating events overseas. In the financial services industry, professionals are eligible for an annual bonus.
