Parties snub NPC bid

Moderate pan-democrat Frederick Fung Kin-kee yesterday entered the race for the National People's Congress, but failed to obtain any nominations from his allied parties - the Democratic and Civic parties.

The former chairman of the Association for Democracy and People's Livelihood submitted 19 nominations received from different sectors. Incumbent medical-sector legislator Kwok Ka-ki was the only nominee from the pan-democratic camp in the Legislative Council.

Mr Fung said the Democratic and Civic parties would only consider nominating candidates who agreed to promote democracy in Hong Kong and the mainland, offer help to locals on the mainland and urge Beijing to ratify the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

He said he would not accept nominations with conditions, and therefore did not receive any from the two parties.
