Exco members give thumbs-up to HKIEd

Executive councillors yesterday praised the Hong Kong Institute of Education's work during a visit to its Tai Po campus to hear its plans to attain university status.

The visit by six non-official Exco members came a week after a meeting between institute officials and the University Grants Committee (UGC) special working group, which is reviewing the institute's proposal.

They met president Anthony Cheung Bing-leung, who is also an Exco member, deputy chairman Eddie Ng Hak-kim and other senior managers. They also inspected facilities and met student representatives.

Exco convenor Leung Chun-ying said the government's top advisory body acknowledged the institute's work in teacher training as vital to the city's education system.

'We gained a comprehensive understanding of HKIEd's development blueprint in today's meeting,' he said. 'I believe this will be very useful when we assist the chief executive in making a decision.'

Mr Leung said councillors would attach great importance to the UGC's views when they discuss the university quest with government officials.
