A white egret stands in the shallows at the WWF Mai Po nature reserve, where a new 'hide' (left) opened yesterday to give nature lovers a front-row seat from which to watch some of the 10,000 exotic birds that visit the reserve over the winter. The hide, reached by a floating boardwalk, gives a close vantage point that does not disturb the many rare and endangered migratory species that either winter at Mai Po or pass by on their way to warmer climates.
