EOC cancels fitness club offer to staff

The Equal Opportunities Commission will adopt higher standards when scrutinising discount packages after it cancelled a deal with a fitness club that offered its staff members and their families preferential terms to get fit.

A spokesman for the commission said yesterday a meeting would be held soon to draw up new guidelines to deal with advantages offered to its workers.

The comment came a day after a person claiming to be an EOC staff member revealed that the commission's chairman and senior management had agreed to a discount deal with California Fitness.

Although the plan was offered to all businesses and other organisations in Taikoo Shing and Quarry Bay, the commission abandoned it after the deal was revealed to news media and commission members Mandy Tam Heung-man and Lo Wing-lok raised questions about a possible conflict of interest.

California Fitness said yesterday it offered discounted corporate memberships as part of its range of membership options.

'In this particular case, California Fitness contacted all companies and organisations close to its Quarry Bay club to promote its corporate membership programme,' it said, adding that the commission was just one of the organisations in the area.
