Hong Kong's Ho Chi-ho has won his first race at the RSX world championships, but still faces a tough battle to reach the medal round of the Auckland regatta in New Zealand.

Ho is 17th overall after eight races and has only two races left today to break into the top 10, who go through to the medal round.

Sailing in light, tricky conditions Ho got buried at the start in race seven when the fleet bunched up. He finished 34th, while teammate Chan King-yin, who started away from the main group, had clear winds and finished 14th in the gold fleet race.

In the eighth race, Ho stayed clear of the fleet and led all the way. Chan finished ninth for 30th place overall, while teammate Cheng Kwok-fai is down in 43rd.

'In general we did well in the light stuff,' said Hong Kong coach Rene Appel. 'As soon as the wind goes over 10 knots, the bigger athletes start gaining an advantage, from there on every further increase in the wind strength results in a relative decrease in our board speed.'
