Nicktoons: Attack of the Toybots (Nintendo DS)

Run for your lives! Killer toy robots are on the rampage in Nicktoons: Attack of the Toybots. Choose to be your favourite Nickelodeon character, save your friends and stop the evil fiend behind all this.

The evil Professor Calamitous wants to show the world how big an evil genius he is by releasing a hoard of killer toys to - wait for it - 'take over the world!' It's an age-old plot device, but it always works.

The game starts off under the sea with SpongeBob and his pink friend Patrick talking about a mysterious new factory giving away giant teddy bears for free. They decide to visit.

The dumb-namic duo sneak into the factory, and Patrick is kidnapped by evil robot teddy bears. At this point Jimmy Neutron and other Nicktoon characters teleport to Bikini Bottom to help stop the evil professor.

The game is a simple 2D side-scrolling fighter, much like the classic arcade games Final Fight and Double Dragon. You make your way to the right of the screen while beating up your enemies. You have control of two characters that you can switch between at any time.

Game play is simple: beat up evil minions, collect tokens and try not to get killed. To mix things up a bit, there is a simple racing stage that leads to a big robot battle. The touch-screen is occasional used to overcome obstacles.

Graphics are wonderfully colourful and manage to meld the different animation styles together well. The sounds are just as good and suit the cartoon style perfectly.

This is a simple, fun game that younger children will enjoy for the Nick factor. Older gamers will quickly find the game repetitive and unchallenging.
