Harbour fireworks to highlight the Olympics

The Beijing Olympics will play a starring role in the Lunar New Year fireworks display over Victoria Harbour.

The most technically challenging part comes in the fifth scene when the Chinese characters for 'Beijing' will light up the night sky, along with '2008'.

Of the 10 fireworks scenes on the night of February 8, four will be dedicated to the Games and the equestrian events, which will be held in Hong Kong in August.

The fireworks will be the first display to be screened on the recently introduced digital terrestrial television broadcasting service.

Wilson Mao Wai-shing, producer of the fireworks, said non-traditional colours like lemon yellow and sharp pink would be created to achieve the best visual effects for digital broadcasting.

The most difficult task for the show would be to produce Chinese characters, he said.

The sixth scene, entitled 'We are ready', will display patterns of circles with different colours, taking the show to a climax. The theme song, We are ready, composed by Hong Kong songwriter Peter Kam Pui-tat for the Games, will be played as background music.

Pony tail patterns will be displayed in the seventh scene, celebrating the equestrian events.

The HK$7 million display will start at 8pm. It will last 23 minutes and 40,000 fireworks shells will be discharged. About 500,000 people are expected to watch.
