What's your school's medium of instruction?

Jennifer Li, 16

Top tunes: Pop

My school's medium of instruction is English. It's better than Chinese because it's an international language and it will be useful if I study or work overseas. I want to study in English at university, too, because it's easier, but I'm comfortable with Cantonese as well. I don't like Putonghua because the pronunciation is difficult.

Angel Lo, 15

Top tunes: Mainly pop

My school teaches in English. I think this is better for some subjects, like economics. But subjects, such as religious education, would be easier to learn in Cantonese. I would rather study in English at university as it would be easier, but Cantonese is fine, too. It's good to learn Putonghua because it is becoming more popular than Cantonese.

Yoyo Chan, 16

Top tunes: R&B

My medium of instruction is Cantonese. I want to study in English at university because it's an important language and is useful for work. Learning Putonghua is also good since China is now the world's second-biggest power. But we must have a good knowledge of Cantonese, because it's our mother tongue and part of our culture.

Oliver Wong, 18

Top tunes: Modern music

I'm taught in Cantonese, which helps me to understand the topics better. But both teachers and students should only use English during English lessons. It would be good to teach Chinese literature in Putonghua because a lot of articles and poems in the syllabus were written by mainland scholars.

Lucy Ng, 16, Top tunes: Canto-pop, R&B

Most of the subjects in my school are taught in English and I'm comfortable with that. However, it would be better for some subjects, such as religious studies, to be taught in Cantonese. Teaching Chinese in Putonghua is a good idea. Hong Kong teens are usually afraid of Putonghua. It will help them speak up.
