Success lies in your hands at this job and is not for the faint-hearted.

Prudential Assurance is looking for an assistant manager in life underwriting and issue to review and determine risk and the reasonable premium required before a policy is confirmed.

'This position performs an important function in an insurance company and the incumbent would fulfil the gatekeeping role to safeguard the company's risk exposure,' said human resources director Peggy Ho Yuen-yi.

'This is a job with significance and high functionality ... and vital to protecting the company's interest and long-term financial viability.'

Reporting to the life administration department, the candidate is expected to underwrite and approve medical cases of new businesses for individual life policies.

A degree holder or registered nurse with qualification from the Fellow Life Management Institute or partial achievement of the Life Office Management Association is sought.

The company is also seeking someone with at least five years of relevant experience in underwriting gained from a life insurance company and says that personality is vital to this role.

'To qualify for this job, having the right attributes are equally important as the relevant qualifications and working experience,' Ms Ho said.

Attributes include a high level of commitment, meticulousness, good analytical power, forward thinking, sound judgment and good communication skills in order to interact with advisers, customers and medical practitioners.

Candidates with previous exposure to medical practices, nursing or biochemical knowledge would be at an advantage.

The person must also be able to work under pressure to confirm applications within a short time, offering timely protection to customers.

'Another edge will be a high flexibility in handling different cases as each individual customer has unique situations and needs,' she said.

One of the role's challenges would be trying to 'strike a balance between business generation and its associated risk exposure'.

Other responsibilities include training and guiding junior underwriters and advisers, handling advisers' inquiries, participating in projects and assisting in reviewing guidelines.

This was a great opportunity, Ms Ho said. The position of underwriting was highly specialised in the insurance industry so the potential for career advancement was plentiful.

'For an aspiring underwriter, he or she will have the opportunity to progress to the position of life administration director or even to the position of chief operations officer,' she said.

Prudential Assurance is a growing platform for life insurance and asset management companies in 12 countries throughout Asia.
