China's Zhang Ling churns through the water in the men's 400m freestyle final during the Good Luck Beijing 2008 Swimming China Open at the National Aquatics Centre, nicknamed Water Cube, yesterday. Zhang won the gold in the test event for the Beijing Olympics. Meanwhile, Hong Kong freestyle swimmer Chan Yu-ning finished seventh in a close women's 50m final. She clocked 26.50 seconds - only 1.5 seconds behind the German winner Steffen Britta.Chan is the only Hong Kong swimmer so far from a five-strong squad to have qualified for a final at the newly-opened Olympic venue. In yesterday's preliminaries, women's 400m freestyle swimmer Carman Nam and women's 100 metres breaststroke competitor Yvette Kong Man-yi both failed to make it through for a chance at the medals. China, meanwhile, has so far swamped the podium with four golds during the five-day competition, including a national record-shattering performance by middle-distance ace Zhang in the men's 200m freestyle.
