Bird flu scare closes park

Mai Po Nature Reserve was closed for 21 days from this morning after a great egret was found dead from suspected H5 bird flu.

The carcass of the great egret was found at Tam Kon Chau, Yuen Long, on Saturday.

The move came just over a month after the reserve reopened from another 21-day closure, imposed after a grey heron died from the deadly H5N1 strain.

It also followed on the heels of a similar shutdown of the walk-in aviaries at Ocean Park less than a week ago, triggered by the death of a black-crowned night heron that might be due to the H5 bird flu virus.
