Celebrities join in family-feud fun with day at the races
Following long-held Lunar New Year traditions, Hong Kong people get together for family meals, visit the new year markets, hand out and receive lai see, and hope to start a year of good luck by betting it all at the races. That's what thousands did on Saturday - the traditional third day of the new calendar also known as chi hou or the day of arguments. Naturally, what better excuse to avoid the relatives than to get out to the Sha Tin track and put down some lai see money on the ponies.
Of course, the Jockey Club added a bunch of special activities, too. Playing on the family feud theme, they invited actors Myolie Wu Hang-yee (left) and Lisa Wang Ming-chuen (centre) - co-starring at present in the TVB hit Wars of In-Laws 2 - to sing a couple of tunes, asked brash food critic Suzi Wong (right) to hand out lai see and got fung shui master James Lee Shing-chak to offer some astrological betting tips.
Lee suggested the auspicious colour for the Year of the Rat was green and the lucky number of the day was three. Good thing we're not superstitious. By CitySeen's tally, only one number three won a race (the 10th) and only three other number threes even placed in the top three the whole day.
At least one person had more charitable thoughts on her mind. Wang was more concerned about the victims of the severe weather across the border. 'I hope the affected area will quickly recover so those who are still unable to reach their family members will soon be able to reunite with them.'
