ABOUT one-third of the tickets for the gala opening of the Hong Kong Stadium were snapped up yesterday on the first day of sale.
A ceiling of 10 tickets for each customer was imposed. The majority of the 44,000 tickets for the event cost $50, with some restricted view seats at $30, and about 4,000 VIP seats at $300.
At the Cultural Centre in Tsim Sha Tsui, however, a special numbering system was abandoned after only about 20 people at a time arrived.
The gala will begin at 7.30 pm on March 11. The climax will be a laser and light concert by French showman Jean Michel Jarre.
Most people said the ticket prices were very low for such a spectacular performance whose cost has proved controversial.
''$5 million for this show is too expensive,'' 63-year-old Lee Fook-kee said outside a box office despite waiting to buy 10 tickets.
