Continental flies closer to staff's heart via big bonus
What beats a candle-light dinner with your loved one or a bouquet of 11 long-stemmed red roses on Valentine's Day? It's got to be receiving a big bonus cheque on this special day.
For the second year, the 30 local employees of Continental Airlines received a special bonus on Valentine's as part of a US$158 million payout to 45,000 staff by the United States carrier.
This year, Continental's special bonus, equivalent to about HK$27,000 per person, was 42 per cent higher than last year's, earning it a reputation as the most generous of the six major US airlines.
Managers at various Continental offices worldwide yesterday delivered pies - in Hong Kong's case, chicken, apple and cherry pies - in a figurative 'sharing the pie' party before handing out the big envelope.
'Valentines are not just for lovers but for our staff as well,' said Wyn Li, country manager.
