Independent character sought for media post

Graduate with mainland sales experience and knowledge of hotel, travel and property preferred

A fun and challenging job awaits the right candidate at Hong Kong's leading English language daily and Sunday newspapers.

The South China Morning Post Publishers calls on applicants to apply for the position of account manager to achieve annual sales budget in advertising revenue and acquire new business opportunities in the mainland.

'The post is important to China business development because there are many ad demands in Southern China cities, such as in the properties and hotels sectors,' said Dennis Li, assistant director of display advertising.

A university graduate with at least five years of media sales or sales experience is sought to help drive advertising revenue for print and online domains from mainland China.

Someone with sales experience from the mainland and knowledge in the hotel, travel and property industries is preferred.

'I think this position will offer the right candidate a lot of room to develop his or her career,' Mr Li said. 'The China market is still big and there are lots of things we can do to improve SCMP's brand and increase our advertising sales revenue.'

Candidates should have a basic knowledge of how to deal with China businesses because the job requires dealing with locals and government officials. An energetic, confident and amiable person in tune with the media industry would do well in managing new sales channels, and developing and maintaining good relationships.

Assisting the business development manager, the account manager would have to plan and implement sales activities. A results-oriented attitude would be imperative. The candidate is also expected to help gather market intelligence, explore and identify new business opportunities, and express creativity when contributing ideas for product development and new supplements. Experience in selling online advertisements would be advantageous.

Mr Li stresses that the person must be self-motivated, independent and hard working, noting that operating in China is not easy.

'This is a sales role, but needs someone with very good PR skills because networks and connections are very important to Chinese businesses,' Mr Li said.

The role demands a fair amount of travelling and candidates should expect travel mainly to Southern China including Guangdong, Fujian, Hainan and Chengdu.

Good communication skills are important for this role and fluency in English and Putonghua is a must.

'Language skills are crucial because they need to be very localised and be able to negotiate and correspond by writing,' said Mr Li.
