Remember the television show Survivor, where a group of people were marooned in a remote location and had to do battle to find the strongest and smartest?
Next Media, the city's biggest listed publisher of newspapers and magazines, is organising its own version of the show to find rising management stars in the group.
The flagship of Jimmy Lai Chee-ying will kick off staff training programmes soon to pick possible successors to top managers and, according to sources, it will be a battle of the toughest. It also may have existing managers looking over their shoulder as Mr Lai seeks new blood for his company.
The publisher of Apple Daily and Next Magazine has selected about 60 staff from its Hong Kong operations, including those from editorial, sales and marketing, production, printing and the internet business.
After meeting personally with Mr Lai, selected staff will form small groups of five to develop and execute new business plans. The company will also fund their proposals if they are feasible.
The strongest performers will be earmarked for possible promotion to the next generation of management.
