PTU set for North America release, but where did they get that cover?
with Andrew Sun. Additional reporting by Clara Mak.
Johnnie To Kei-fung should be happy to note that his 2003 film PTU: Police Tactical Unit will be released on DVD in North America late next month. The movie will come out through Dragon Dynasty, a home entertainment arm of the Weinstein Company, for which Quentin Tarantino is a consultant.
Dragon Dynasty has just started releasing Asia titles.
However, we wonder how To feels about the sexy new cover art.
While the Hong Kong film posters featured just the cast standing with a night backdrop that emulated the claustrophobic feel of the movie, the North American cover makes the film resemble something more like Die Hard, with a collage of explosions, a low-flying helicopter and Simon Yam Tat-wah with a gun in each hand.
It's been a while since I saw the film, but I don't recall any of these elements actually in the movie.
This makes us want to ask Bey Logan, Hong Kong-based vice-president of Asian acquisitions for Dragon Dynasty: 'What were you thinking?'
Less extreme is their title change for Feng Xiaogang's The Banquet. It has been retitled Legend of the Black Scorpion for North America - hopefully it won't be confused with Curse of the Golden Flower, unless of course that was the idea.
It's out on Tuesday in the United States.
