Open University clears grant's 'floor' level

The Open University has received HK$90 million in private donations this year for the matching grant scheme.

The university now has enough to go beyond the 'floor' of HK$45 million to get guaranteed government matching and can fight for a share of the larger pot.

But president John Leong Chi-yan said competition was so keen for funding that the money was likely to be snapped up quickly.

The university and another private institution, Shue Yan University, are newly included in the fourth round of the scheme, which had only covered the eight publicly funded tertiary institutions.

Professor Leong urged the government to double the scheme's funding as a huge budget surplus was expected this year.

'The present HK$1 billion is essentially not enough, given that the number of institutions included has risen from eight to 10,' the professor said.
