The Education Bureau said this week it will translate a controversial paper on the teaching of Chinese to ethnic minorities into English, but rejected legislators' calls to extend consultation on the proposals. The bureau had turned down requests for an English translation to make the consultation paper, which was released last month, more accessible, saying it targeted Chinese teachers. But in a written response to Legco this week, Education Secretary Michael Suen Ming-yeung pledged a translation would be available by the end of the month. Consultation on the proposals is due to run until March 22.
