HKIEd hopes for a share of postgraduate places
The Hong Kong Institute of Education is hoping to secure up to 60 postgraduate research places after the government announced this week it would fund an extra 800 places from next September.
The institute currently has no research postgraduate students, but its acting vice-president for research and development, Cheng Yin-cheong, said he hoped HKIEd could secure between 20 and 60 places.
There are only 140 postgraduate students in Hong Kong dedicated to education research, representing 3 per cent of the total postgraduate research force.
'It's difficult to foster sustainable research forces to support education development and reform,' Professor Cheng said.
He said the institute must strengthen research in areas such as education policy, teaching and learning, as well as school performance, in order to support the development of local education.
