Funded by the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office and administered by the British Council, the Chevening Scholarships are offered in more than 150 countries for people to become familiar with Britain and gain skills that will benefit their countries.

The programme provides almost 2,300 new scholarships each year for postgraduate studies or research at tertiary institutes in Britain. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office also runs Chevening Online, a website exclusively for scholars and alumni.

Competition is intense for the scholarships, involving a written test and interview. There is a Chevening alumni association in Hong Kong.
