In Interstoff Asia Essential's trends archive, Spring/Summer 2009 will go down as a year of contrasts - cutting-edge technologies and organic fibres, neutral hues and vibrant sorbet tones.
The influence of new technologies punctuate almost every fabric trend, creating bright chic patterns and funky surface effects, such as 'enamel coatings, glittering and sparkling reflections, patinated used aspects and burnt out motifs,' according to Ornella Bignami, chief designer, and a member of the Interstoff Asia directions trend committee.
A subtle feminine sex appeal underscores the vast body of fabric patterns as enriching textures and strong bright colours create a preference for girly dresses, skirts, blouses and flaired trousers.
This, coupled with the need to escape the usual, introduction of a new freedom of expression has ushered in a portfolio of print motifs, embroideries and finishings to provide decorative elements.
Natural fabrics with bio and organic qualities are never far from the heart of the themes. Rich materials interpret naturalness with ease, playing with lightness and clean compact surfaces as the latest developments are shown in the Techno Trend Area. Atypical natural and organic fibres, such as bio-cotton and bio-linen in addition to new fibres from bamboo, soya and milk, are showcased at the Eco Trend Area.
Trends this year have been categorised under three broad groupings: clarity, patina and orientalism. They show marked contrasts yet share enough similarity to form a cohesive whole.
