Beating the enemy

People gather under the Canal Road flyover in Causeway Bay during the White Tiger Festival yesterday to take revenge on their enemies by beating paper effigies of a tiger with a shoe. Ritual performers can be hired for between HK$50 and HK$100 to chant curses and beat images of their clients' foes in a practice that originated with the worship of a protective tiger spirit. Workplace enemies and foolish business partners are a staple of the practice, but housewives also join in to take revenge on their husbands' mistresses. The festival was also marked on Temple Street, Yau Ma Tei.
